Not to put meself forward or anything.. but... this is pretty much the same shit we do. The father of a friend of mine had a MG B with a broken engine, we knew a guy with a Turbocharged 2.3 litre volvo engine... :P This was years ago though, so no pictures.

I was just thinking the other day about how the earliest Trabant 1.1s are almost US legal, and then you have to go and show me something that tops those.

Oh, the 2-stroke ones have always been allowed here, anything older than 25 years is perfectly fine (though you may have trouble passing emissions in California or any state that follows their standards). There's quite a few of them in the States.
But, I'm holding out for the water cooled Polo engined ones. They become legal this coming spring.
